Travelling abroad
Export controls apply when you are taking controlled technology with you when travelling abroad, e.g. for conferences. When planning for travel, you should review whether your laptop / presentation / USB stick etc. contains controlled technology and whether this is necessary for the purpose of your trip. Keep in mind that some countries, including China, may inspect phones and computers at the border. If you decide that it is necessary to take the device that contains controlled technology, you will have to apply for an export licence. The need for an export licence also applies if you need to access or download controlled technology from the UK while abroad, e.g. from a University shared drive onto a public computer abroad.
