Research Grants User Group meeting – 18th July 2024
The next Research Grants User Group (RGUG) will take place as a Teams meeting on Thursday 18th July at 11:15am. The agenda will include updates about Worktribe, UKRI’s The Funding Service and the National Security Act.

UKRI’s Funding Service – letter of intent
Whilst UKRI are transitioning from JeS to their new system The Funding Service, some award letters may be delayed. Where this is the case, a ‘letter of intent’ will be sent to the Principal Investigator. If your academic colleagues receive one of these letters, could you ask them to forward the letter of intent to the ROO Post Award team as soon as possible.
ERC Work Programme 2025 Announced
The ERC’s 2025 Work Programme has been officially approved and over 2.7 billion euros will be allocated for research grants in the upcoming year. The Programme outlines the available funding opportunities, call budgets, grant competition schedules, and terms for ERC funding.

The work programme also introduces new criteria for extending the eligibility periods of Starting and Consolidator Grants due to a disability or a major natural or man-made disaster.
UKRO, the UK NCP for the European Research Council, will host two webinars on the ERC 2025 Starting Grant call. We recommend applicants register for the following events

European Innovation Council (EIC) Information Event 4 July 2024 – slides and recording
On Thursday 4th July 2024, the ROO EU Team organised the European Innovation Council (EIC) Information Event (online). Please visit the event webpage for the slides and recording of the event.
Cross Research Council Responsive Mode Pilot Scheme Round 2 - Information Session 18th July 2024
UKRI recently pre-announced the Cross-research council responsive mode pilot scheme: Round 2, which will be managed according to the University’s restricted calls procedure. The Research Funding Team welcomes anyone interested in this scheme to an online information session which will include:
- information about the scheme and the internal selection process
- signposting to UKRI resources and application support from within the Research Funding Team (post-internal selection)
- previous applicants’ perspective and advice, followed by a Q&A

The event is open to anyone interested in applying to the scheme or anyone supporting applicants in the application process. The session will not be recorded but slides will be made available after the event.

Elizabeth Penner, Andrea Salter and others will present an overview of the event, drawing attention to novelties, priorities and opportunities that may be of interest to the wider Research Grants Administration community here at Cambridge. In the meantime, the conference programme is still available and gives a good overview of this year’s flavour of topics.
Cambridge Africa ALBORADA Research Fund 2024
The Cambridge-Africa programme is pleased to announce that the call for proposals to the ALBORADA Research Fund is now open.
Applications are invited from pairs of researchers (post-doctoral level and above) from the University of Cambridge (or an affiliated institute) and African universities or research institutes, across all disciplines, to initiate and/or strengthen research collaborations.
Please note that the African applicant can be based in any African country and the awards are no longer restricted to African researchers from sub-Saharan Africa.
The Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Research Fund competitively awards grants of between £1,000 and £20,000 for:
- research costs (such as reagents, fieldwork and equipment)
- research-related travel between Cambridge and Africa
- conducting research training activities in Africa (e.g. workshops/courses)
The deadline for submission is 12th September 2024.
