In January 2018, the Research Policy Committee (RPC) discussed the impact of late research grant applications. It was noted that the current number of late applications placed an unacceptable additional burden on Departments and the Research Operations Office (ROO) and created financial risk for the University. To address this issue, the following proposals were agreed

From 1st October 2018 –

  • Applications submitted after the ROO deadlines would not be submitted to the funder without a genuine reason for late submission approved by the relevant Head of Department and acknowledgement that the Department would accept the risk posed by any errors or omissions in the application.

  • A single deadline of 5 working days prior to the funder submission deadline for all Standard Applications and Open Calls.

  • A pre-check service of the finances available until 7 working days prior to the funder submission deadline. This would allow changes to the non-financial aspects of the proposals until 24 hours before the funder submission deadline.

  • Raising the threshold for Small Applications to £250,000 fEC.

The full discussion is available in the RPC minutes, Item 4  and the proposals were also presented at the April Research Grants User Group meeting. Over the coming months, reports will be circulated to Heads of School and Heads of Department to highlight those applications which are late and ROO will be working with administrators in Departments to help prepare for the changes on 1st October 2018.
