The Coordinator’s Role and Responsibilities

All multi-beneficiary Horizon 2020 grants require a partner to lead the Consortium and assume the role of Coordinator of that grant. The Coordinator has additional responsibilities above and beyond its own scientific deliverables and the obligations of all grant beneficiaries.

According to the terms of the legal grant agreement the Coordinator must:

  • Act as intermediary between the European Commission and the other consortium partners
  • Monitor compliance with the project
  • Distribute the project finances, keep financial records and provide information to the Commission upon request
  • Request and review any documents or information required by the Commission and verify their correctness and completeness before submission
  • Submit the deliverables and periodic reports to the Commission

Importantly, none of the above tasks can be subcontracted or performed by any other beneficiary. Therefore if your consortium includes a Project Management company please consider these limitations and contact the Research Operations Office for further guidance.

In addition to the above contractual tasks a Coordinator would normally:

  • Write and submit the proposal
  • Negotiate sign-off of the Consortium Agreement
  • Chair scientific and project management meetings
