1. New Requirement for RCUK Funded Equipment to appear on National Portal

In accordance with recent updates to RCUK's Terms and Conditions, all RCUK Funded Equipment purchased above £138,000 is to appear on the National Equipment Portal

If you ensure items to which this would apply are given PUBLIC visibility on the Cambridge Equipment Sharing Database, they will automatically export and appear on the National Portal. If you need any assistance upon how to achieve this please don’t hesitate to contact the Equipment Sharing Project Manager: Christopher.R.Wilkinson@admin.cam.ac.uk

For more information on the updates to RCUK's Terms and Conditions, please refer to RCUK’s website

2. Improving the research process - discussing an 'open research' position

How can we ensure that researchers are rewarded for the quality of their research and not only for the impact factor of the journals in which they publish? What needs to happen so the quality of the whole research process is taken into account when considering recruitment or academic promotions?

Could our University have a position to encourage better transparency and openness in research? Could this solve some of the current problems experienced in the academic sector?

The Office of Scholarly Communication would like to consult researchers on a number of ideas geared towards helping researchers to make all of their work openly available and rewarding the quality of the whole research process. We count on YOU to tell us what current problems in academic research are and what ideas would be useful to include in a planning document.

Everyone is welcome to come to this event and contribute their ideas.

3. The Data Dialogue. Time to Share: Navigating Boundaries & Benefits

Researchers are faced throughout their careers with managing research data. Implementing best practice early on cannot only help you to access the right data quickly, but also ensure that data is relevant, reusable and accessible to others, contributing further to scientific research.

This unique event aims to provide Early Career Researchers from a range of disciplines with the tools and knowledge to better approach their research data needs, covering the benefits of sharing data, how we share difficult and sensitive data, gaining access to restricted, secure, or open data, and what types of repositories are available for use.

Please register here.

Abstract submission is now open on the website of SES.

4. Wellcome Trust Grant Tracker

Grant applications submitted from August 2015 onwards

Applications from August 2015 onwards will have been submitted on the WT Grant Tracker system. For these applications, Grant Start Certificates (GSCs) now need to be submitted through WT Grant Tracker. This is indicated by the first character of the Wellcome grant reference number being a 2.  The process requires the lead applicant to submit the GSC to the administering organisation for Institutional approval, who then submits the GSC to Wellcome trust.

Grant Applications submitted before August 2015

Wellcome trust has yet to receive Grant Start Certificate (GSCs) for a few grants where the application was submitted before WT Grant Tracker was introduced. GSCs for these awards cannot be submitted via WT Grant Tracker, and instead should be submitted as email attachments to the following email address: grantpayments@wellcome.ac.uk. This is indicated by the first character of the Wellcome grant reference number being a 1. GSC forms for these awards are available on the website of Wellcome Trust.
